Workshops: Over the last seven years I have traveled throughout the country delivering all-day workshops and half-day training sessions for both public librarians and school library media specialists who work with preteens and teens. A few of my most popular workshops topics, all of which focus on creating a new generation of library services for a new generation of library users, include:
- Graphic Novels for Children and Preteens
- Graphic Novels for Teens
- General Library Services for Young Adults (marketing, programming, collection development, teen reference, teen spaces, etc.)
- Adolescent Development and the Developmental Needs of Teens
- Adolescent Brain Research
All libraries have different training needs. Please e-mail me to find out more about creating a customized workshop that will best meet the needs of your organization.
So what do attendees have to say about Michele's workshops? “Michele was funny, interesting, and made sure we were all comfortable asking questions. She gave a wealth of information on all areas covered. She was very excited about graphic novels, and it showed in her training.” –workshop participant, Virginia State Library Association Pre-Conference (Williamsburg, VA)
“One of the BEST workshops I've been to ever! I learned so much that I can immediately apply to my job. It filled in a lot of gaps in my knowledge. Michele was a fantastic presenter! Even though the workshop was 3 hours long, it could have been all day to cover even more.”
-Elise Sheppard, Harris County Public Library (Houston, TX) “I found Michele’s skills as a presenter to be excellent - very friendly, personable, down-to-earth & informative. Great handouts. I can see why she is a successful teen librarian!” -M.O. Metropolitan Public Library Association Conference (Wollongong, Australia)
”I just wanted to say your recent graphic novel workshop in Ft. Worth was WELL worth my time…thanks for presenting a wonderful workshop on graphic novels that helped me see that I am on track with having this format and how I can support whatever is questioned or challenged.” -Ellen Warthoe, Ft. Worth Public Library (Ft. Worth, TX) “Michele is so dynamic YA Librarians don’t feel like the “LOST TRIBE” when she is instructing & motivating.” -workshop participant, Pittsburgh Multi-district Workshop (Pittsburgh, PA) “I recently attended a YA Services all-day workshop given by Michele Gorman (which was FANTASTIC, by the way! If you ever have the chance to go to one of her workshops, don't hesitate!) I can't think of a workshop I have enjoyed more recently!” -Patricia Foster, Salt Lake County Library System (Salt Lake City, UT) “I came to the graphic novel workshop on Friday, Feb. 13, and I absolutely loved it. You were just the motivation I needed to gear up the young adult services at my library.” “Instructor’s very knowledgeable. Also, she was sensitive to her audience’s needs.” -workshop participant, INCOLSA Workshop (Plymouth, IN) "I loved your
presentation...your enthusiam and concern for the teen reader vividly pointed out to
me that I was headed down the wrong path. I am currently a librarian ...[and] I was seriously considering not
purchasing nonfiction books this year because our budget is tight and kids want
to do their research on the computers anyway. After listening to you I will be
personally interviewing the males at our school asking them what they would like
to read. I'm betting they are more likely to pick nonfiction." -Norma Rice, Northwest Regional Library System (Panama City, FL)
You have inspired me with your ideas and I hope to attend
another of your events in the future. Thanks so much!" -Christi Iffergan, Union Branch, Gaston
County Public Library (Gaston County, NC)
